Hi Silverhawk Blanket statement !! anywhere that people have been ,,
More specific statement, anywhere that people have been in numbers for many years,, more detailed statement, Research of the area that you live in is key to finding the good places for any given geographic area, Look for old maps, newspaper articles showing your town in days gone by locate old carnival ,circus, fairgrounds ,old school yards that are either defunct or replaced by things like city parks,or a newer building, demo sites ,side walks, houses, apt buildings,, (I personally like the old homes where there were kids playing and loosing change for decades) swimming holes, fishing holes campgrounds, drive in theaters, older yet are homesteads, cellar holes, and Calvary ,civil war campsite or encampments,
most of this info can be found through local historical groups, oddfellows, masons, oldtimers at the local coffee shop(it would amaze you what can be found out over a cup of coffee) online historical maps, or even museums of local history can be productive,, I know that I found the old railway stops in this area, as well as the stagline routes from a map at the local museum, a quick picture and then its just research and pin pointing the landmarks, and of course getting permission to hunt some of the areas which are now in private hands.
bottom line !!!! Research!! is the key !!

Beaches rank #1
Old amusement parks #2
Old schools #3
Old houses #4
Be SURE to check local laws. In Virginia, they are very serious about what can be taken out of the ground.
Florida also has heavy restrictions.
Old railroad tracks are also a great place. Many people followed the tracks, long before there were roads.
Luckily here in Delaware, we have history everywhere. I live within a few hundred yards of the original Mason-Dixon line starting point. It isn't hard to find houses here dating back to the mid 1750's.
Metalman is correct about the research. Although, just heading up and down the beach is almost a sure bet everytime.

I've tried a spot with my metal detecter that used to have a old house standing, though I've tried and did not have any luck.I've always have bad luck, never found anything but soda tabs, and bottle caps, etc.I'm joined in the losttreasure magazine,I've learned where to look off of them.you can look in old barns, because farmers back then did not trust banks and would hide them on lofts, near stables, etc.

The beach has always done well for me. I find more jewelry than anything else. River beds are also a good choice. I use the White DFX detector, and it cuts down the learning curve quite a bit by showing roughly what is in the ground. It isn't perfect, but does cut down on the scrap junk quite a bit.
My next purchase will be an underwated detector. I have rented a few while diving and there is a vast unsearched are waiting to be tapped.
I would suggest contacting your local historical society to find some areas that were used by lots of people. Old parks, battlefields, and other large gathering areas. I hear that old churches are also a great place to search.

I live in a small town in the panhandle of texas and in the mid and late 1800s the town was on the state line and called ochiltree I go to old ochiltree from time to time and take a medal detector with me and have been fortunate enough to find a small amount of old coin in fairly good shape.. I always sold them in a shop in liberal kansas only to regret it. Also one of my favorite places is the outskirts of alot of towns you can walk the train tracks or get old railroad maps and find old abandoned line shacks. Great place to find coins and other really neat items.....

I finally found something with my meta detector.I went to a old campsite and I was searching and my detector went nuts!I found two 1965 dimes,2 1965 quarters etc.None of them were silver that was the only disappointment.Though I found 1.09 worth of coins.

Be careful of using your detector on or near any battlefields. There are stiff penalties for using detectors on battlefields, they will fine you and take your detector. If you go to any battlefields, go off the beaten path, wander out on to the battlefield, and keep your eyes fixed on the ground, you’ll be surprised by what you may find. My father and I have been to many battlefields over the past 20 years, and we have found parts of guns, a bunch of bullets, a bayonet, a small part of a wagon, but only one coin. What we found is probably worth a couple hundred dollars, but it is still a lot of fun, and you learn a lot about the Civil war, and Revolutionary war by visiting the sites.
Good luck. |

The Civil War & Revolutionary War battlefields are left as a reminder of what we had been through.
The government had laid some rules and regulations to protect them so they will be there for the future. There are a lot of artifacts still in the ground all over the battlefields (cannons, cannon shot, guns, bullets, personal belongings, bodies, ect.).
The only way they would let anyone dig on the grounds is if they went through the proper channels to get the permits for a dig, but the best way to do that is to be a archaeologist, and even when you have a chance to dig, the historical societies will try to block this. They will say that you are going to destroy the site by digging, and disturbing the men that have fallen.
Believe me, I would love to go to a battlefield and use a metal detector, but I do not want to get fined for doing so.
Here is one for thought, the area around the battlefields was still used as a fighting ground. The people that owned the land then never gave it up to the government, go and ask them if you can use your detectors on their land, some will say yes, you’ll be surprised by what you find.
Civil War and Revolutionary War artifacts are wanted, and people will pay good prices for the items.
