I have a 1914 2 1/2D indian, I know it's a fairly uncommon date and worth quite a bit with the right condition- problem is..

I looked it over with my naked eye and then my loupe- something is off about it, I remember someone telling me various different ways to spot fakes but I can't remember all of them at the moment- could anyone please read those off to me so I could verify?

Greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Note; the coin IS gold, not worried about that, just the date and who struck it is bothering me.

hello gotgold.

one characteristic invariably shows up on counterfeit quarter eagles of the indian variety. it shows up in the form of raised horizontal  "tool marks" at the back of the indian's neck. also, there may be a depression above the "4" of the date, caused by a lump on the die.

another diagnostic of a counterfeit can be seen on the indian's bust, just below the necklace. again, tooling and or filing have taken place on the die to remove lumps. hope this helps.Wink

Please post a photograph. That is the only way we can correctly answer you. Thank you, and welcome to the forum.
