   I couldn't help but recognize that there wasn't a thread for Roman coins, so I decided to start one. I will put some pictures of my own coins online within the next few days. Perhaps that will spark some more interest.

          Roman coins range in size, shape, metal, denomination, and collector's value. Back in the days of the Monarchy (circa 1100 B.C.) and up to the 4th century A.D. soldiers would carry their coins with them wherever they went. Whenever soldiers would go into battle they would dig a hole (while nobody was watching) near the base of a tree and bury their coins. This way they wouldn't have to worry about being over-encumbered with a load of metal coins during a fight. When a fight was finished, the soldier would return to that spot in order to retrieve his money. As you can imagine, many soldiers died in battle. Thus, their coins remained buried and forgotten.

          The Empire was massive; it extended as far north as Scotland, south as Sudan, east as modern-day Iraq, and to the westernmost shores of Portugal and Morocco.
