the word beginner hardly defines my coin collecting experience but from research I've done & actually just read more about today.  I think....emphasis on the 'thinks, that is what's considered doubled die. however this is apparently often confused even by professionals w/ machine doubling. so basically there's a doubled coin or a coin w/ doubling  difference being the doubled image is the die rather than a shift between die strikes. 
doubled looks crisp & almost shelf like.

 doubling* appears smeared or rolled


...also seems if it's machine doubling it won't wrap the corners of a letter that appears doubled. but instead it only appear doubled along the vertical line of a letter for example. if the die become doubled its the exact image twice just a smidgen misaligned so there's always the same crisp sharp edges to the stamped image.  hope this helps & hope my info is correct. best of luck
