I never find anything good in change lately but I have neighbors and friends that are always giving me a pile of old stuff they dig up from somewhere. Mostly nothing of any value. At a flea market a few weeks ago I bought a notebook full of Nickels. There were 228 buffalo Nickels alone and most in at least EF condition. Also, some Liberty Head Nickels, Jefferson Proofs, and somehow a flying eagle cent. Cost was $180.

An entire roll of silver quarters including liberty standing quarters from the bank.

Posted By: fitey8

I often search through cents and halves, my best finds have been of lately including an 1893 and 1889 very worn indian head, hundreds of wheats, some old canadian pennies, a few off center errors. My best find was this morning, i was shocked. It was an extremely worn and harshly cleaned 1914-d lincoln. I couldn't believe it. The d and 19 are easily seen, but I had to get out my 10x lense to see the 14. I'm not even sure of the value yet, but Im excited to take it to my dealer.

Hi,
Sorry I've been gone so long.
Hope all have been well.
When I was four years old I found an 1888-P Morgan Silver Dollar (VF/XF) laying in the grass.

Lately, I have picked up from circulation: a 1934 $5 bill, a brand new minty fresh 1977 $10 bill, 1875 Indian Head cent, and 1957;1958;1964 Lincoln cents in VF/XF.

1937-D Three Legged Buffalo Nickel...oh, wait that was just a dream  Wink

couple of Mercury dimes
1887 Morgan dollar
'88 silver eagle
1934 $100 note
1915 wheatie

and lots more...all from the courtesy booth of a grocery store while in college.  If I would have known anything about coins/paper currency back then, I would have accumulated even more.  The store I worked at had a lot of cash transactions vs electronic ones.

My sister got a 1979 1 Cent coin from South Africa in change back in late 1989,a few months before New Zealand's 1c. & 2c. coins were pulled from circulation.I still have the coin.

We used to often get coins from Australia,Fiji,& occasionally,Great Britain in change.I used to get the odd large 5 Pence or 1 Shilling coin in change as a 10c. coin & the odd large 10 Pence or 2 Shillings coin in change as a 20c. coin. This was because the coins were the same size.

I used to spend a lot of the Aussie 5c.,10c.,& 20c. coins,as they would always turn up.

The old Sixpences,Shillings,& Florins from New Zealand used to be extremely commonly found in circulation when I was a kid,as they were legal tender as 5c.,10c.,& 20c. coins respectively. In the last few years, they became increasingly uncommon. They are now no longer in circulation,as they have also been pulled along with the older New Zealand coins.

Aidan.

Not exactly a curculation find but I did find an old hand carved jewelry box in the trash when I took mine out a few weeks or so ago. I kept the jewelry and old love letters and hankerchiefs from the 1800z. But this fits in a coin forum. Seem like a type set with no dollar slot.

I finally found something half-way interesting through circulation: a mint-state 1964 nickel and three red uncirculated pennies from 1978 and 1979.

I went to a bank in Beverly Hills and noticed the teller had a stack of half dollars.  From the color of the rims, I could tell that some were actually silver.  I asked her to give me $40 worth of half dollars and she gave me the whole stack.  They were mostly 40% silver halves in the 1960s, but a few were 1964.  Perhaps someone turned these in with earlier coins, and the bank employees kept the Walkers and Franklins as oddities?  I know some do, because one of my bankers told me he exchanged two quarters for a silver Booker T. Washington Half Dollar that someone deposited to their account.
I think sometimes family members inherit coins from deceased collectors and sometimes deposit them in the bank.  In the 1960s, my Great Aunt deposited several thousand Buffalo Nickels that my Great Uncle had stashed away in the 1950s.  I suspect most of them were "S" mints because most of the coins in Los Angeles came from the San Fransisco mint way back then.
If you have similar stories, in addition to posting here, please email them to the Beverly Hills Coin Club, http://www.bhcoinclub.org - www.bhcoinclub.org   One of their members is currently working on an article about "circulation finds".

I got this a couple of days ago when I went to a local fast food place.  This is a gold plated New York State quarter with an MVP of a Yankee ball player on the other.   I know it's not worth anything other than it is just neat to get stuff like this in change.  Anyway, after I started asking around some, apparently these things are circulating all over Atlanta, especially mid-town area.

If anyone has one that has an uncirculated look about it, I would love to work up a swap with you for it.  I'm suprised I've not read anything about it anywhere before th is.

Cool.  I got a 1943-P Silver Nickel in circulation last month, but it was pretty worn down, around VG grade.

Forgot to mention - I was at the Drug Store in Beverly Hills a few months ago and the lady gave me about eighty cents in change.  Among the coins was a 1945 Mercury Dime.  I was very surprised.

My friend at the local grocery store saves me the odd coins and I found a proof Clad Eisenhower .  I'm at work so I don't have the year handy.  Most the times I get silver quarters or Kennedy halves.

Today I received a buffalo nickel in change when I went to the gas station.  It was not in the best shape, (the date was worn off).  However, it is still fun to get something like that back.  I'm suprised it made it my way.

- silver mercury dime
- 2x silver Roosevelt dimes
- non-silver Roosevelt dime
- 1912 wheatie
- 1924 wheatie
- about another 100 more common date wheaties (40's and 50's)
- 25 - 30 1970S small dates (and about 30 large dates)
- a few off center strikes
- 2x pennies that have been shot with a bullet
- brass plated penny (its almost highlighter yellow)
- about 20 Canadian pennies
- 1947 canadian penny

i was pretty pleased...

I have an old coin that my mother gave me that is about the size of an old silver dollar. On the front it has a woman with what appears to be a wreath around her head and has the words "LVD XIIII D G" and "FR ET NAV REX". On the back it says "SIT NOMEN DOMINI V BENEDICTVM 1652"
Can anyone please help me identify this coin? Is it worth any money?

Julie

You have got a coin from France called an Ecu.It was issued during the reign of King Louis XIV (1643-1715).As to a price,it depends on the mintmarks & privy marks as well as condition.
