   40 years ago I found a penny with "SJ" mint marking. Does anyone know anything about it?

I have no idea as I am not a freak of coin type collector, but does it look like the coin on this link.

   Thanks for the reply. I posted a picture. Not real clear, but the "J" appears attached to the bottom of the 5.

They refer to this variety as the "San Jose Cent". It's a die break that creates the "J".
 
I know because I have one too.

Common error. Cuds and just blobs are frequent accurances on coins. Usually they are just dismissed and not even kept by many that find them. Yours does look like a J though. Also, note the 9 has a stand making it appear as it is standing on something. The top of the 9 also has wha appears as a hat.
